Fowler’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter was re-established in December 2017 when Cheyenne Federau came to start teaching Biotechnology, Ag Mechanics, Plant/Animal Science, Ag Leadership, Ag Structures, M.S. Agriculture, and Intro to Ag for the school. This was something many students were excited about and in the past two years the program has seen substantial growth. The FFA Chapter in Fowler now has eighteen members.
“FFA is preparing us for our future. It can also be used in any field of work,” said Caleb Heinz, President. “It also showed me how to work with others and taught me how to help them instead of telling them what to do so they can learn and have those experiences.”
FFA students participate in food science, veterinary science, livestock judging, horticulture, welding, job interviews, parliamentary procedure, agriscience fair, FFA state convention, and several community service activities.
“Students are able to use their classroom knowledge in a work-like setting. FFA gives students career skills that will help them find jobs in the future. FFA also instills a need to give back to the community,” said Mrs. Federau, Sponsor.
“FFA really benefits the community- a lot of what we do is for the community,” said Nate Cunningham, Treasurer.
Students also are required to complete any kind of agricultural-based project called a Supervised Agricultural Experience, or SAE. SAEs are ways students can track the career skills they are using outside of school, and students are able to win awards based on what they have accomplished.
Darien De La Torre placed 3rd in par-law. Par-Law stands for parliamentary law or parliamentary procedure. It is the rules on how to properly run a meeting. Darien had to learn how to make motions, vote, point of order, and hold discussion. The team also took 3rd overall.
“Something that has benefited me from being in FFA has been getting comfortable with things I haven’t been comfortable with before. I am more comfortable with equipment because we do more work with them through FFA,” said Darien De La Torre, Reporter.
“Budgeting and working on the financial side of things has been an important part of my experience with FFA,” said Emie Carrillo, Secretary.
Through Fowler’s FFA program, students have had the opportunity to have real world experiences with something in which they are interested. The leaders and members in this organization have been exemplary in their FFA duties.
