“We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” This quote by J.F.K. hangs in our hallways at school. Every day students come in and see that quote. The students at Fowler continue to ‘shoot for the moon’ in everything they do. They once again impressed everyone at the local science fair competition.

This year any student enrolled in a science class was asked to enter a science fair project into the the school wide competition. These projects were incorporated into their science classes. Students were scored on oral report, display, and scientific methods.The students conducted thorough scientific research, as well as stated questions, problems and a hypothesis clearly. These projects required students to problem solve and apply their thinking to real world problems, which is something that has been a big focus in our school for the past three years.

Students were required to earn at least eighty points out of one hundred to qualify for regionals. 19 projects qualified which had a total of 39 students in grades 3-12. Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd each completed a class project which will also go on to regionals.

“The science fair is good for students because it gives them a chance to explore their own interests with a hands on experience that they may not have gotten before,” said Mr. Adams, 6th-12th grade science teacher. “I think the hardest part of the science fair for students is persevering if the experiment doesn't work.”

“I learned important skills I hadn’t thought about before. I had to work really hard because it was difficult to do my experiment (which was making a recycled blanket) because it was a very delicate process, but I pushed through and did it. It was something I had not done before,” said Hannah Masri, winner of the high school division.

“To prepare for the science fair I had to research my project and find information. I had to make sure I had a good display and good project. I chose to do hydroponics because my teacher gave me the idea and I really liked it,” said Alejandro Arenillas.

The local science fair is just one illustration of USD 225’s belief that students learn best through experiences. Congratulations to the students who will be representing our school at regionals!
